The Amfissa Olive Grove stands as one of the country’s most ancient, boasting a history that spans an impressive 3,000 years. Archaeological evidence suggests that wild olives were being gathered here as far back as the Neolithic Age. However, according to certain accounts, it was the Pelasgians who initially cultivated olive trees in this region during prehistoric times. Despite the passage of numerous civilizations, the essence of the land’s use has remained unaltered. Expansive and encompassing 5,500 hectares, the Olive Grove is home to around 1,200,000 trees. Stretching from the town of Amfissa to the Corinthian Gulf, and from the village Erateini to Kirra, it forms Greece’s largest continuous olive grove, a significant facet of the renowned Delphi Landscape.
This single cultivation, non-linear plantation is adorned with aged trees, 70% of which surpass the remarkable age of 150 years. These trees exhibit deeply textured trunks, lush foliage, and some even reach impressive heights of up to 10 meters.
The olive groves comprise parcels known as “lachidia,” each separated by raised trafia berms designed to collect rainwater. In areas with slopes, the land is thoughtfully terraced.
Of special historical note, the Olive Grove is traversed by the ancient path leading to the Temple of Delphi. Below the village Chrisso, once known as ancient Krisa, the olive trees of Krisaio Pedio (Field) once hosted the Delphi Horse Racing Forum in antiquity. This was the site of the Pythian Games, a prominent athletic event that drew competitors from every corner of ancient Greece.
In our modern times, a significant portion of the Olive Grove is integrally woven into the Delphi Landscape, an esteemed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
