About The Place

Lake Tsivlou is located in the Municipality of Aegialia, Prefecture of Achaia, at an altitude of approximately 700 meters, on the slopes of Helmos. It was created on March 24, 1913, when a large landslide caused in the area blocked the bed of the river Krathis.

The lake has a surface of about 8.3 hectares and a depth of about 80 meters. Around and near the lake one can go hiking, where the greenery and the view will compensate him. Near the lake there are the villages of Peristera, Agia Varvara, and Zarouchla. The name of the lake comes from the village of Tsivlos which was partially submerged after the landslide. Local tradition also calls it Black Lake for the evil it caused.

Today, Lake Tsivlou is a very important wetland that hosts many species of flora and fauna. It is also a popular leisure and walking destination.
