Full description

Exploring the pristine alpine Dragonlake of Mount Timfi stands as one of the most captivating attractions in the Zagori region of Greece. This hiking adventure promises to be a journey of awe-inspiring natural beauty, from lush forests to breathtaking rock formations, and finally to the mythical Dragonlake itself.

Our hiking expedition commences in the charming village of Mikro Papigko, nestled amidst the Zagori region’s lush landscapes. Here, we find ourselves surrounded by a captivating forest that ushers us into the heart of this alpine wonderland. The uphill path through this verdant forest is nothing short of magical, as sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows along our route.

As we leave the embrace of the forest behind, a jaw-dropping alpine vista unfolds before our eyes. This is where the legendary ‘Towers of Astraka’ reveal themselves, towering rock formations that seem to touch the heavens. These awe-inspiring natural sculptures stand as sentinels of the alpine realm, testament to the raw power and beauty of nature.

Our journey continues as we ascend towards the Astraka Mountain Refuge, perched at an elevation of 1950 meters. Here, we pause to savor a well-deserved lunch, surrounded by the crisp mountain air and panoramic views that seem to stretch to the edge of the world. It’s a moment of tranquility amidst the grandeur of the alpine landscape.

With renewed energy, we set forth towards our ultimate destination—the mythical Dragonlake. This pristine alpine lake is a sight to behold, cradled within the embrace of Mount Timfi. As we approach its shores, we are greeted by the ethereal beauty of its crystal-clear waters, reflecting the azure sky above. The north side of the lake treats us to breathtaking vistas of the Smolikas mountain range and the Aoos valley, while the east side offers a panoramic canvas showcasing the northwest Gamilla Mount.

As the day begins to wane, we reluctantly bid farewell to the Dragonlake, retracing our steps back to Mikro Papigo. The return journey follows the same trail, offering a fresh perspective on the landscapes we traversed earlier in the day. It’s a chance to savor the beauty of the journey one more time before we reach the village, our hearts filled with the memories of an unforgettable adventure.

In conclusion, hiking to the alpine Dragonlake of Mount Timfi in Zagori is a soul-stirring experience that immerses you in the raw beauty of nature. From the lush forest to the towering rock formations and the tranquil embrace of the Dragonlake, this journey is a tapestry of natural wonders waiting to be explored.
