Full description

In Greece, you’ll find archaeological sites almost everywhere, some of which are widely known and attract numerous visitors. Yet, there are hidden gems nestled right beside us. The ancient Greek castle in Elliniko, Kynouria, and the ancient city of Thyrea boast a 3,000-year-old history, waiting in the serene embrace of Arcadian nature and the nourishing sun to share their secrets with us.

To reach this area, a 30-minute drive from Paralio Astros will lead us there. After a brief hike on a dirt road, we’ll follow an easily traversed path that will take us swiftly to the hill’s summit. As we progress, the remnants of the ancient wall will suddenly emerge before us; this marks the western tower of the fortification. Here, we’ll enter the castle, and the panoramic view will enchant us, providing an opportunity to discuss the ancient borders of Kynouria and delve into its history.

We’ll explore the interior of the castle, seeking traces of the ancient settlement. Exiting through the East Gate and encountering an abandoned shepherds’ settlement, we’ll find ourselves close to yet another delightful surprise. An ancient sanctuary, preserved because local shepherds repurposed it as a dwelling for their animals. From there, a brief jaunt down a dirt road will lead us to the van awaiting our return to Paralio Astros.
