Be the first to review “Hiking the Rouvas Gorge”
Experience the captivating beauty of Zaros through an exhilarating hiking adventure that unveils its ancient water spring and breathtaking landscapes. Known since antiquity for its fresh water source, Zaros awaits just an hour and a half’s drive from Heraklion. The return journey is equally as scenic and fulfilling. Within the gorge of Saint Nicholas lies the Rouvas forest, a vital ecosystem boasting holly trees of national significance.
Embark on the hiking trail that commences from Zaros Lake, forming part of the renowned E4 trail. Our path leads us through the enchanting gorge of Agios Nikolaos, where we tread along the riverbed surrounded by lush greenery. During the spring, the river flows abundantly, creating captivating waterfalls and serene ponds. After approximately 2 hours of invigorating hiking, covering almost 5 kilometers, we arrive at the mesmerizing Rouvas holly forest. A picturesque picnic area awaits us at Ai Giannis, complete with a mountain shelter, comfortable seating, toilets, and a refreshing spring—a perfect spot for a well-deserved snack break.
At this juncture, we face a choice: continue onward to the scenic location of “Dyo Prini,” where panoramic views of the Rouvas forest, Zaros, and the Messara plain await, or return to the starting point at the lake.
