A captivating hiking expedition through the enchanting landscapes of Dropull, as we begin this activity with a comfortable vehicle transfer to the village of Goranxi. Immerse yourself in the local culture as we visit the village church and finalize the checklist of essential items for our journey. Prepare to ascend the majestic Broad Mountain (Mali i Gjerë) and uncover the hidden treasures that await.
Embarking on a trail of low difficulty, we venture into a dry creek flanked by towering rocks. Witness the mesmerizing karst massif that closes the gorge from the north, offering a rare and breathtaking natural spectacle within the Drino valley. As we traverse this territory, you’ll discover a rich abundance of caves and underground springs, adding to the allure of the surroundings.
The ascent towards the renowned Ravena Monastery takes us through a natural habitat teeming with Mediterranean shrubs. This area is renowned for its medicinal plants, including mountain tea, sage, oregano, bee grass, lavender, and wild rose. As we conquer a vertical climb of approximately 300 meters, the architectural marvels of the monastery begin to unfold. Experience the source of purification, a medieval construction adorned with well-preserved bathtubs that filter groundwater through the karstic rocks. Nestled on a small plateau, the monastery offers panoramic views of the Drino valley, capturing the essence of serenity.
Dating back to around 1600, the church within the monastery stands as a rare testament to medieval architecture and mural painting, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of Orthodoxy and Catholicism. This tour provides valuable insights into the little-known history of this monument, offering a deeper appreciation of its significance. As we indulge in a leisurely lunch near the monastery, take the opportunity to savor the surrounding nature for approximately one hour, allowing tranquility to wash over you.
The return journey follows the same trail, offering a different perspective as we descend. While the descent may require less time, the activity’s difficulty increases due to the sloping gravel terrain. Upon reaching Goranxi, we conclude our memorable expedition by returning to Gjirokastra in the comfort of our vehicles.
