Be the first to review “Night Canyoning at Havos Gorge, Central Evia”
Night Canyoning at Havos Gorge takes place on Mount Xerovouni, which is located in central Euboea and belongs to the Dirfys mountain range. It is a rocky mountain with numerous climbing routes (traditional climbing). Crossing its ridge during winter is not an easy task at all. Snow covers the holes in the rocks, making hiking quite dangerous. Even the path leading to the summit requires winter equipment. However, without snow, traversing the ridge can be quite enjoyable.
Surrounding the mountain, there is a forest rich in flora. During the ascent, you encounter chestnut trees, firs, pines, oaks, etc. Despite the mountain’s name (Xerovouni, meaning “dry mountain” in Greek), it is not entirely dry, as there are many springs and places to camp under the shade of the trees. There are also many forest roads around that can be crossed with a mountain bike. From Mount Xerovouni, you can see the peak of Dirfys and enjoy a view of the Aegean Sea. The best time for hiking in the mountain is spring and autumn.
During the summer months, the rocks of the ridge emit heat, making hiking strenuous. Based on the refuge located in Dirfys, one can embark on a two-day hike to both mountains in the area. Although its highest point does not exceed 1453 meters, due to its geographical location, it often experiences heavy snowfall.
