It is an exhilarating Psiloritis Summit Hiking adventure, ascending the highest point in Crete with an impressive altitude of 2,456m. It starts at Lakkos Mygerou, 1700 meters up Mt Ida. Our journey begins on the well-marked stone-built trail and continues along the renowned E4 European trail to the majestic Timios Stavros peak. Here, you’ll get a panoramic view of the whole island. Despite the summer heat, it’s surprisingly cool here compared to sea level, often requiring a light jacket despite the warm beach weather expectations.
There’s a lot of mythology and history at Psiloritis, which is in the Rethymno region. The legendary Idaion Andron cave, believed to be the birthplace of Zeus, was sacred to the Greek Titaness Rhea. As Greece’s highest peak, Timios Stavros is notable for its topographic prominence. Geologically important, the mountain is part of UNESCO‘s Global Geoparks Network.
Since the Psiloritis Summit Hiking is usually covered in snow during the winter, ice axes and crampons are essential mountaineering equipment. According to the ancient Roman historian Tacitus, Psiloritis is associated with the origin of the Jewish people and its natural wonders.
We provide complimentary pick-up service from Heraklion for your convenience. You may also be able to pick up from other areas along the route, depending on availability and location. Feel free to contact us with any questions or if you require transportation. To facilitate a smooth pick-up, please provide us with your exact hotel location.
If choosing this hike during the winter, you will need a day pack (approx. 25-35 liters), trekking shoes, fleece jacket, windproof jacket, water bottle (at least 2.5 liters during the summer), hat, sunscreen, goggles, and ice axe and crampons.
Crampons and ice axes are essential for a winter ascent.
