About The Place

The journey of the Venetikos begins with the convergence of two streams, one descending from the southeastern slopes of Vasilitsa Mountain and the other from the northeast of Avgo Mountain and the southern Taliaros Hills. These streams, named Aspropotamos from the west and Dotsikiotiko from the north, unite in the gorge of Portitsa, nestled between the villages of Spilaio and Parorio, forming the inception of the Venetikos River. Prior to this juncture, the northern branch carries the name Velonias. From this point, the Venetikos River winds its way eastward, covering a distance of 46 kilometers.

Traversing south of Orliakas Mountain and continuing south of the city of Grevena, the river becomes a visual spectacle at the “Gates of Venetikos,” where it flows between imposing vertical rocks. As it progresses eastward, near the village of Agapi, the Venetikos River merges into the Aliakmonas River. Throughout its course, the Venetikos is fed by numerous streams and rivers, including Smixiotiko, Stavropotamos, Tranos Lakkos, Sarganaiko, Agiouaras, Vathylakkos, Kerasia Lakkos, Paliokastro, Dyo Dendra, Kerasia, and Kryoneri.

The landscapes surrounding the Venetikos River boast molasse formations and alluvial deposits, creating a unique canvas of geological diversity. Its winding course forms a rich tapestry of habitats, from expansive canyons to verdant valleys and dense riparian forests. Adventure seekers can explore this pristine terrain through activities like rafting, embracing the untamed beauty of one of Greece’s most remarkable natural areas.

The riparian forests lining the Venetikos are adorned with common alders, willows, narrow-leafed ashes, and oriental plane trees. As it meanders, the river transitions between wooded slopes adorned with firs and pines, eventually giving way to various oak varieties. The region surrounding the river is a haven for plant species such as Colchicum autumnale, Galanthus reginae-olgae subsp. vernalis, Dianthus deltoides subsp. degenii, Actaea spicata, Betonica scardica, Anthericum liliago, and Tragopogon balcanicus.

Moreover, the Venetikos region is a paradise for birdwatchers, featuring a diverse avian population. Permanent residents include grey wagtails and dippers, while the river is frequented by grey herons, great egrets, little egrets, cormorants, kingfishers, snipes, and sandpipers. Birds of prey such as lesser spotted eagles, short-toed eagles, and buzzards soar above, contributing to the area’s rich biodiversity.

The Venetikos River, a haven for plant and animal life, becomes a canvas of color during the flowering season, featuring orchids like Cephalanthera damasonium, Epipactis palustris, Neotinea tridentata, and Ophrys species. Amphibians, reptiles, and mammals further enrich the region’s biodiversity, with brown bears, wolves, otters, and a variety of snakes making it their home.

The ichthyofauna of the Venetikos River includes rare fish species like the European spirlin, large spot barbel, Vardar nase, Vardar spined loach, and West Balkan trout. Additionally, the crystal-clear waters invite swimmers to witness this underwater spectacle during the summer months.
