Full description

Embark on an extraordinary road expedition that delves into the untamed and captivating side of Crete. Agiofarago and Matala, nestled in the southern region of Heraklion, offer a striking contrast that makes our tour truly exceptional. On one hand, the serene and spiritual Agiofarago captivates with its rugged beauty, while on the other, the vibrant Matala entices with its lively hippie-style atmosphere.

Once you meet your experienced guide and receive a brief introduction, our journey takes us southward, traversing the picturesque plain of Messara en route to Agiofarago, the “Gorge of the Saints.” Our first stop introduces us to the charming village of Siva, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or gather essentials for the remainder of the day. A short distance away lies the renowned Odigitria Monastery, a significant religious site dating back to the 14th century. Here, we pause for a brief visit to appreciate the monastery’s historical and cultural significance. As the road transforms into a rugged dirt path, we continue our adventure towards the parking area of Agiofarago, marking the entrance to the gorge. From there, we embark on a picturesque hike, navigating the gorge adorned with magnificent oleanders and ancient olive trees. After approximately 30 minutes, we reach the stunning beach and the inviting waters of the Libyan Sea, where you can take a refreshing swim and revel in the tranquil surroundings.

Following our time in Agiofarago, we return to the car and set our course for Matala. This small yet bustling village boasts a magnificent 300-meter-long sandy beach with crystal-clear, deep waters. Matala rose to fame for its remarkable carved Roman tombs and its association with the vibrant hippie community of the ’70s, who found refuge within these ancient caves. Here, we indulge in a rejuvenating swim at the beach before savoring a delightful lunch at a traditional local tavern, allowing you to experience the authentic flavors of the region.
