About The Place

Kissavos, also known as Ossa, is regarded as a geological extension of Mount Olympus, and it is geographically separated from it by the Tempe Valley. Reaching a maximum elevation of 1,978 meters (Prophet Helias), Kissavos is situated between the Larissa Valley to the west, the Agia Valley to the south, and the sea to the east, where its slopes descend to form sheltered coves.

A prominent valley cleaves the mountain into two sections, referred to as the “Big Canyon” to the north and the “Big Stream” to the south. Geologically noteworthy, Ossa boasts a foundation of crystalline rocks overlaid by other igneous formations.

The eastern and northern flanks of Kissavos are enveloped in lush surroundings, where a variety of forests including beech, chestnut, and pine thrive. The mountain’s southern ridge also hosts stands of fir trees. To the east, Kissavos meets the Aegean Sea, revealing splendid beaches and a diverse medley of vegetation, ranging from shrubbery and plain trees at lower altitudes to beech and fir trees at higher elevations.

Throughout much of the mountain’s expanse, particularly its eastern aspects, remarkable canyons cut through the terrain, often accompanied by vigorous streams. Among these, the Kalypso stream stands out, adorned with waterfalls, pools, and jagged rocks. The northeast side boasts a rugged and untamed landscape, with the peak’s cone devoid of vegetation. Perched at an elevation of 1,978 meters, the summit even harbors a captivating underground chapel dedicated to Prophet Helias.
