About The Place
Bali, a charming coastal area in Crete, Greece, offers a perfect blend of sun-soaked beaches, turquoise waters, and traditional Cretan hospitality. Situated in the northern part of the island, Bali provides a serene retreat with its scenic landscapes, cultural richness, and a variety of activities to suit every traveler’s taste.
Bali is offering a picturesque setting characterized by lush greenery and rocky outcrops. The beaches of Bali, such as Livadi, Varkotopos, and Karavostasi, are known for their golden sands and crystal-clear waters. The coastline is dotted with small coves and bays, creating an idyllic seaside escape.
The fauna of Bali is influenced by the coastal environment and the Mediterranean climate. Sea turtles, including the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), nest on the beaches of Crete, and their presence is a testament to the region’s commitment to conservation efforts. The surrounding waters attract various marine life, making Bali an excellent destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.
The history of Bali is intertwined with the broader historical narrative of Crete. In ancient times, Crete was a hub of Minoan civilization, and traces of this rich past can be found in archaeological sites scattered across the island. While Bali itself doesn’t have major historical sites, its proximity to archaeological wonders such as Knossos and the ancient city of Eleutherna allows visitors to delve into the island’s storied past.
Culturally, Bali maintains a laid-back and welcoming atmosphere. The village is dotted with traditional tavernas, where locals serve up authentic Cretan dishes. The cuisine is influenced by the region’s agricultural bounty, featuring olive oil, fresh vegetables, seafood, and local cheeses. Visitors can savor these flavors while enjoying the sea breeze in the waterfront tavernas.
The village of Bali is characterized by its quaint charm, with white-washed buildings, narrow alleys, and blooming bougainvillea. The small harbor is a focal point of activity, with fishing boats bobbing in the gentle waves. Local shops offer handmade crafts and souvenirs, providing a taste of Cretan craftsmanship.
Activities in Bali cater to a variety of interests. Water sports enthusiasts can partake in activities such as windsurfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding in the calm waters of the bay. Boat trips are a popular option, allowing visitors to explore the coastline and discover hidden coves. The nearby hills provide opportunities for hiking and exploring the lush landscapes of the Cretan countryside.
Bali also serves as a strategic base for exploring the broader region of Rethymno. The historic town of Rethymno, with its Venetian architecture and charming old town, is a short drive away. Travelers can immerse themselves in the cultural richness of Rethymno, exploring museums, Byzantine churches, and the imposing Fortezza fortress.
In conclusion, Bali in Crete, Greece, offers a delightful combination of coastal beauty, cultural charm, and outdoor activities. Whether seeking relaxation on sun-drenched beaches, exploring the rich history of Crete, or indulging in the flavors of Cretan cuisine, Bali provides a serene and memorable experience in the embrace of the Mediterranean landscape.

Keep an eye out for sea turtles during our journey. Crete is home to the loggerhead sea turtle, and if we’re lucky, we may spot these incredible creatures along the way. The island’s nesting beaches, including Rethymno, Bay of Chania, and Bay of Messara, play a vital role in their conservation.
Upon meeting in Bali, we’ll provide a brief introduction to kayaking techniques and safety. We’ll ensure that your paddles, kayaks, and buoyancy aids are properly adjusted before setting off on our adventure. Depending on the conditions, we have two options: paddling towards the eastern or western part of Crete.
The western route, more suitable for experienced kayakers, offers breathtaking views and secluded pebble beaches. If we choose this option, please bring your own packed lunch, as there are no facilities along the way. We will notify you via email if this applies to your trip.
Generally, the weather remains calm until late May or early June. We recommend avoiding July and August when the “Meltemi” wind blows strongly.
We offer complimentary pick-up from Heraklion, and in some cases, we can arrange pickups from other locations along our route. Please provide us with the exact location of your hotel to ensure a smooth transfer. Transportation is free of charge. If you’re in Chania or Rethymno, you can reach the starting point by bus or taxi, with travel times of approximately one hour and fifteen minutes from Chania, 30 minutes from Rethymno, and 45 minutes from Heraklion.
