Full description

Situated in the heart of Merabelo Bay, the largest bay in Crete, this sea kayak tour offers an exhilarating adventure suitable for experienced paddlers. Embark on a short open crossing to Pseira Island (3.2 km) and explore the breathtaking coastline that follows.

Paddling distance: During the tour, we will cover approximately 15 km, allowing ample time for swimming and snorkeling in secluded beaches inaccessible by cars. Experienced paddlers have the opportunity to extend the journey by an additional 6 km (20-21 km total). All necessary paddling equipment and a knowledgeable guide will be provided.

Equipment: Choose between single or tandem (double) kayaks for your convenience. Participants with limited experience will be assigned tandem kayaks, known for their ease of paddling. Experienced paddlers can enjoy top-quality sea kayaks from reputable brands such as Nigel Dennis, Valley, North Shore, P&H, and 3kymia. Our trips primarily feature composite kayaks.

Trip itinerary: Commencing from Tholos Bay, situated at the narrowest section of North-to-South Crete (merely 12 km wide), this trip offers a unique wind experience. Due to the region’s peculiar geography, strong winds originating from various directions occur every few kilometers, necessitating proficient boat trimming skills. This adventure is ideal for intermediate and advanced paddlers with a British Canoeing 3* or higher certification. Please refer to the provided article for more information on the British Canoeing qualifications. As the conditions can be challenging, this trip is not recommended for beginners. However, it remains one of the most cherished excursions on the island.

About Pseira Island: Pseira Island boasts a rich historical background, having been extensively explored in 1906-1907 and later studied in greater detail from 1984 to 1992 by Philip P. Betancourt and Costis Davaras. Archaeological discoveries in this coastal settlement, connected to its harbor by cliffside stairs, span from the end of the Neolithic period in the 4th millennium BC to the Late Bronze Age. The highlight of this ancient seaport is the concentration of well-preserved structures surrounding an open square, with one notable large building dominating a side. Like many contemporaneous Late Minoan IB sites, Pseira Island was tragically destroyed, most likely between 1550 and 1450 BC. For a more comprehensive understanding of its history, please consult the relevant Wikipedia link. During our tour, we will take a break to indulge in swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island.

Suitable season: January to June and September to December (Avoid July and August)
