Our expedition commences as we set off towards the awe-inspiring Asterousia Mountains. These remarkable southern Cretan peaks serve as a natural barrier, separating the picturesque Messara Plain from the glistening Libyan Sea. Within the range, archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of ancient Cretan cultures, adding a layer of historical significance to its already captivating natural beauty. Recognizing its rich heritage, remarkable history, and exceptional landscapes, the Asterousia Mountains are currently being considered for UNESCO recognition as a revered heritage site.

Our journey continues until we reach the starting point of the Eligia Gorge, situated in the captivating Kapetaniana area. Here, a comprehensive safety briefing awaits, ensuring that you are familiarized with the necessary equipment and essential procedures for traversing the gorge and Via Ferrata safely. Once the briefing concludes, we venture into the gorge, embarking on a short hike that unveils the geological wonders and diverse landscapes of the ravine. It is within this rugged terrain that the Via Ferrata commences, presenting an extraordinary opportunity to witness the untamed beauty of the Cretan landscape. Throughout the ascent, the majestic peak of Kofinas, the highest point in the Asterousia range, graces the route, providing a stunning backdrop to the entire adventure.

As we progress through the Via Ferrata, revel in the captivating Cretan scenery that unfolds before you. Upon reaching the midpoint, where the Mytiki peak resides, be prepared for a captivating moment where the enchanting gorge on one side and the sparkling Libyan Sea on the other captivate your senses. Take a pause and soak in the captivating surroundings, capturing memorable photographs to forever commemorate this unique experience. Moving forward from Mytiki, we follow a circular climbing route that eventually leads us to the end of the Via Ferrata. Subsequently, a brief hike guides us back to our starting point, where we have the option to explore the charming village of Kapetaniana. Nestled at an altitude of 750m on the slopes of the Asterousia Mountains, this quaint village boasts a population of approximately 80 inhabitants and offers awe-inspiring vistas of the Libyan Sea and the mesmerizing Messara Plain.
